How to prepare and maintain a basketball court?

A basketball court takes up a lot of space and it is difficult to ensure that the private courts are to the exact dimensions of the professional courts. Apart from the play area and marking lines, a basketball court also requires adequate out of bound areas surrounding the play area. This is important for player safety. So, a private basketball court is not only difficult to prepare, it is also difficult to maintain the right proportions of the various markings within the play area. People with space constraints can use the professional dimensions are guidelines and proportionately decrease the length, width and play area markings; as per the available space. Proportionate dimensions can be suggested by experts after they survey the available space. People can also individually complete the proportionate markings by obtaining the dimensions from the net but they must first determine the dimensions of the available space.

The ideal flooring material for a basketball court is wood. Wood provides the necessary bounce during the game and is also easier on the players’ knees and joints. But, wooden floorings are expensive and are also very difficult to maintain. Also, wood cannot last for a longer time when it is exposed to natural elements. The alternative flooring solutions for a basketball court are asphalt and concrete. Asphalt floors are relatively cheaper and are also easier to maintain but on the flip side, they have a shorter life span. Concrete floor is the best and cost effective option for a basketball court. They are cheap, easy to maintain and last for a long time. They might not be ideal for game play; they can wear out the players a lot sooner but they do provide good bounce and play ambience.

Maintaining a basketball court can depend on the flooring material used on the court. Wood requires constant maintenance, especially when it is exposed to nature. Asphalt must be guarded against cracks and tendency to form lumps of uneven areas. Concrete floors require minimum maintenance as they are sturdy.  Periodic cleaning of the play area can ensure that it is kept clean of dust and water accumulation. The play area markings will need regular repaints as they tend to fade within three or four months. The flooring by itself must be re-laid after four or five years as there may be irreparable cracks and unevenness due to regular wear and tear.
